VeriVide’s DigiEye non-contact imaging system is an invaluable tool for the Food industry. The non-contact imaging and colour measurement of DigiEye ensures that the product is captured in its natural state and irregular shaped products such as fruit and vegetables, bread, cakes and biscuits can be imaged and assessed; giving greater versatility to measure product beyond the scope of the traditional spectrophotometer or colorimeter
The unique controlled lighting cabinet, produced by VeriVide, is ideal for the objective & reliable measurement of colour in a range of food products including bread and baked products, sauces, sweets and even, liquids such as beer, wine, whiskey, pops and soda.
The DigiEye System is used within the Food Sector to help deliver product which conforms with the visual expectation of the Customers
The Colour Clustering technique automatically groups pixels of the same colour together and then calculates the percentage of the total pixels within the image. By measuring the proportion of different colours within an image, this feature can calculate the proportion of an ingredient in a mixture.
Leading manufacturers within the biscuit, cereal and dairy dessert industries approached us to define this valuable feature; a requirement within the food industry is to calculate the composition of a food for the quality control of products such as yogurt or soup where the amount of fruit or vegetables within the liquid is critical to meet the specification. Other important uses of the ‘clustering’ technique are to calculate the amount of bran present in a loaf of bread, or to calculate the total coverage of a chocolate layer on a partially coated biscuit. The feature is also an advantage in the meat industry to calculate the percentage of visible fat.
The range of functions possible using DigiEye can be illustrated with the image of the cherry cake. This cake was analysed for slice dimensions, crumb colour, colour distribution through the crust, proportion of cherries and distribution of the cherries giving invaluable information to feedback to the production process about time and temperature of baking. Within this sector of the food industry DigiEye is used for reliable measurement of the colour of cake icing to ensure a consistent product.
Applications for the DigiEye System developed for food products include:
- Measurement of fruit and vegetable ripeness
- Measurement of bread crust colour and thickness
- Measurement of proportions in mixtures, such as salads and mixed vegetables
- Measurement of the coverage area and uniformity of coatings such as icing, enrobing or dusting
- Assessment of colour changes during storage trials
- Assessment of process effects on colour
NB - The pictures illustrated on this page show examples of the diverse food types which can be colour measured using DigiEye. These images have NOT been taken with the DigiEye system howeverillustration of images taken using the DigiEye System can be seen within the CCFRA Case Study.
