DigiPix > CASE STUDY: Measurement of Coloured Liquids

THE APPLICATION: - Imaging & Colour Measurement of Coloured Liquids.

The DigiEye system is used for the imaging and colour measurement of samples in their original container, previously impossible to measure and assess using a standard spectrophotometer.

DigiEye provides a non-contact measurement for all types of materials including liquids, creams and waxes and is therefore ideal for many of the numerous products in this sector.

ISSUE 1: - Traditionally liquids must be decanted for Colour Measurement.

Colour Measurement has traditionally relied on spectrophotometers; however, in order to measure liquids accurately the liquid must be decanted into a sample cell, which can be messy, lead to wastage and does not allow the sample to be viewed during measurement.

With the use of the DigiEye system offers exciting alternative options;

  • Liquids can be imaged and measured in their original container, thereby eliminating the need to decanti from one container to another.
  • Crucially the colour measurement will also includes the aesthetics of the bottle, which is important factor with cosmetics and perfume.
  • New colourways can be assessed on screen, using the DigiPix colour replace software, without the time-consuming option of producing actual samples.

THE TECHNICAL BIT

The calibrated camera captures data in RAW format for very high-resolution images. The image is captured in controlled and consistent lighting which the software transforms the RGB data from the camera into CIE* colour space thereby enabling accurate non-contact Colour Measurement of the liquids.

Consistency is the key and as the environment is totally controlled, the measurements are repeatable. The image can be retained with its associated data for visual assessment and correlation. Images with the relevant data can be sent electronically around the world.

Additionally the DigiEye software also contains a choice of Colour difference equations allowing samples to be imaged with, and compared to, agreed standards.

Colour measurement, using DigiEye, will also includes the aesthetics of the bottleSamples can be recoloured within the bottle.

DigiPix Colour Replacement software

The DigiPix Colour Replacement software also enables an object to be recoloured using colour information from a variety of sources including Pantone colours, or company colour library information in several data formats. The appearance of the liquid and its container with associated reflectance is retained during the recolouration enabling an accurate visualisation of the final colour.

An example of the recolouration, which is possible of the liquid within a bottle, is shown above. The blue liquid in the bottleon the left is the original sample - the green recolouration being created with the DigiPix Colour Replacement software.

The recolouration can be even subtler, as is shown by the examples below. The bottle on the left is the original sample and in the bottle on the right the liquid has been recoloured pink with DigiPix Colour Replacement software.

  Subtle colour changes can be assessed using DigiEyeDigiPix Colour Replacement software can reduce requirement to produce samples.
